Unknown presenter - BBC
NB: The clip used - live studio footage of 'Dirty Beating Heart' (venue unknown) is endemic of Snub TV's policy of originating as much of it's video material as possible. The Fall's first appearance is particularly good - as is New Order's. A much missed music show.

O/V-PRESENTER: [-] for their as yet not released new song - 'Dirty Beating Heart'.
LIVE CLIP - Howard totally plays to camera in a delightful manner - highly developed from earlier live tapes Set design is cheap (a stage of small lights- hmmm.) but HD's costume features a terrific waistcoat.
PRESENTER (TO HD): You have been in a couple of bands who people like these days to describe with words like 'seminal' - the Buzzcocks and Magazine. Could you tell us a bit about the early history of both of those two bands - starting with Buzzcocks.
HD: Weeell. We always accounted ourselves approximately the third band that could ever - with alacrity - call itself punk. That was kind of after The Sex Pistols and The Clash. (mocking strain to the heavens) Or were we fourth - maybe The Damned-no - we beat The Clash. We beat The Clash. The Damned got in second I think - in terms of actually existing and playing. And we're talking - what? - 1976. (looks around) Here. I did about ten gigs at most with the Buzzers and towards the end of that phase recorded an E.P. called 'Spiral Scratch' erm - which we put out on our own label - New Hormones. This was all happening in Manchester. Erm. And then I left the band and they continued for a number of years - probably in a more well-known formation (shuffles head). They started having some hit singles and all that stuff - with Peter Shelley singing. But I'd gone by then. And I went on to put together Magazine - sort of late in 1977. At the time I said something about sort of being out of breath - because in punk songs of those days you crammed in as many words as you could in the shortest period of time. Erm. And then I said something about wanting to do fast and slow songs. And that was about all that was defined about Magazine - although I did know - erm-I did want to have keyboards involved. Because - of course - not many punk bands use- used keyboards.
Now an extreme close-up on Devoto's face
PRESENTER: And did you just get bored with the idea or felt like it had gone as far as it could go?
HD: I lost my willpower somewhere along the way. Nothing to do with any specific dissatisfaction I could put down - it was just one of those- bodily-chemical things that happens to a man every now and again. (smiling) I don't know. I don't quite no why - but it was there in 1981.
PRESENTER: Noko - how did you meet Howard?
NOKO: Well - there are various stories circulating about how we got together - but we really met in a rehabilitation unit for sexual offenders in Seattle. (HD trying hard to be straight-man by now) Erm - we met over a game of backgammon actually. Erm
HD: I don't remember any of this.
Nasty cut to uncomfortable looking Noko - then back.
PRESENTER: Is it possible to sort of describe what Luxuria is - is about?
HD: (leans forward - gesticulating with hands) It's absolutely impossible.
