In the late 70s punk was just becoming widespread yet Devoto left Buzzcocks - who turned out to be the the quintessential tunesmiths of the era and formed Magazine.
Was the band named after a glossy lifestyle supplement or an urgent way of packing ammunition. At the time the sound of the first single supported the latter whilst in hindsight later offshoot bands supported the former. To put it another way were they 'refined and elegant' or 'locked and loaded' ?.
By 1981 Magazine band had produced 4 studio and 1 live album(s) - 3 Peel sessions - and 9 singles with enough extra material to fill another album. They been through 3 drummers/3 guitarists/2 keyboarders and not content with that they found enough time to split.
Today the legend lives as their name is mentioned in hallowed tones - 'Record Collector' has never done a discography of them, band pictures are scarce. The best one can hope for is a dusting off - of their one TOTP performance.
