Secondhand Daylight

Key Tracks: Feed The Enemy, Back To Nature, Permafrost

The Nosferatu-esque Howard Devoto was the voice of a science-fiction winter: harsh, robotic, not wholly unthreatening and benign.

Secondhand Daylight, his band's second album, was a chilly affair, from its cover - which appears to be some sticks rammed into some ice, one of which is impaling a skull - to titles such as The Thin Air and - most wintry song of all time alert - Permafrost.

It contains the remarkable line, "I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost". Luckily, Magazine had no female fans or he would have been reported to the police.

It is, of course, a splendid record. Christ, it's cold in here.

Best moments Permafrost, all five minutes 25 seconds of it.
