Malcolm McLaren seated: After SLF segment So it wasn't all happening in London - Oh no. In fact our next mob of cheeky lovable mop tops put the North West on punk's map - but only after they invited my gang's the Sex Pistols to play their first gigs North of Watford Intro to No 7 Tony Wilson: producer of So It Goes - present day One of my greatest achievement was to get Sweep and Sooty to perform 'Boredom' on 'So it Goes' - I was very proud of that. Sooty Sweep (and guitar) and Matthew Corbett playing 'Boredom' on 'So It Goes' Tony Wilson: So It Goes - 1978 Thank you very very much - and for those of you who didn't recognise it sweep doing a very avant garde version of 'Boredom' there a classic song from a classic band - this the band Buzzcocks - 'What Do I Get Video' (No 37 Feb 78) Ian Dury: Voice Over Manchester's Buzzcocks were formed at the throbbing heart of North West England's punk scene - Bolton Institute of Higher Education. Buzzcocks B/W Stills interwoven with interviews Pete Shelly: Vocal/Guitar I answered and advert on a college notice board - 'Musicians Wanted' and it was this weird guy called Howard Devoto Howard Devoto: Vocals I don't really have a memory of my first meeting of Petes - I knew it was something to do with the sexual deviants society at college or something like that Pete Shelley: over coloured band pixs Howard said are you really serious about this band - you know are we going to and try and do something Ian Dury: over live footage and Breakdown After seeing the Sex Pistols the student band took their music more seriously and their clothing Howard Devoto: close up I think I might have turned up at High Wycombe to see the Sex Pistols that first time wearing a pair of gentle cord flairs now there was obviously some room for improvement there. Pete he went a bit overboard really Pete Shelley: over shots of lethal trousers I just got a pair of salmon pink jeans and I ran them up on my mum's sewing machine so I had trouble getting me feet in and out of them - they suited me and they used to stop traffic. Ian Dury: over Boredom Solo And their career made great strides when Howard wangled them the support slot with the Pistols in Manchester Steve Diggle: Guitar I'd never been on the stage in me life - I wasn't one of those kind of musicians that played in pubs - so we got on and we were shaking with nervous energy and delivered something that was pretty frightening really. Ian Dury: over First Buzzcocks gig - Free Trade Hall Manchester Jul 76 So Manchester now had punk rock but the record deals were still in London Howard Devoto: mid shot We're never gonna have our own record - guess we'll just have to do it ourselves Pete Shelley: over Spiral Scratch cover For £500 we could have pictured sleeved records and picture sleeves were virtually unheard then. Ian Dury: over Spiral Scratch recording details Their Spiral Scratch record became the first independent punk record - but Howard's way lay in a different direction Howard Devoto: extreme close up OK Now we've now made a record thats great - thats a milestone - at which to stop. Ian Dury: over unknown version of Shot by both sides Devoto left to find his own band Magazine - and within 4 years had left the music business altogether. |
