Hi Ian, Conway from the Fall website here. I've just noticed (as a result of a discussion on our forum) that the Magazine tour schedule page doesn't include a show they did at Main Street Cabaret in Auckland, New Zealand, which would have been around Sept. 1980 - before or after the Australian gigs. It was an absolute stormer too, remember it very fondly to this day. All the best.

Hello, I was the original poster of the bass equipment question. Just wanted to say thanks for all the information provided. If you have any other info about Magazine's gear, I would be glad to hear it. Thanks

Spellbound:the story of John McGeoch Category: Music Spellbound;the story of John McGeoch. BBC Radio 2 between 8-9pm 2nd Feb. The Howard voice on it is very convincing in places, so much so I thought it might be a sample of the man himself, but in fact it's Momus doing a very good impersonation.

a)I see there is actually info on this site re this b)Just bought it off ebay....

The tribute song is by Momus; it's called The Most Important Man Alive and, as far as i know, is only available on the Bungalow Records compilation Suite:98. It's a great track and definitely worth tracking down.

does anyone know anything more about a tribute song to Howard - from ages ago I think, of which the first verse goes: You are, quite simply, the most important man alive I'd like to thank you for simply being in my life You never meant to leave much of a mark On a world you're content to leave in the dark But you are, quite simply, the most important man alive

It's a Magnum 1 Howard, the Magnum 2 has onboard EQ. I only know this because I've been after one ever since I saw it on the cover of Play all those years ago. Not that I'm an obsessed bass nutter or anything !!!! p.s. if anybody has one and wants to give it to me, that would be fine !

Howard on 11:57 6th-Dec-07 GMT [www.youtube.com/watch] #72d-47145
.... and judging by this 1984 video he also had what appears to be a fretless Ibanez Musician. It's got that classic Magazine sound so he probably had it on MMATW

flux on 10:05 4th-Dec-07 GMT #458-47133
to follow on from Howard's comments about Barry's basses - think he used an Electro Harmonix Clone Theory - a chorus type pedal which was very popular at the time... EH have updated them but you can still find the old type on ebay

Howard on 11:11 1st-Dec-07 GMT #920-47094
To the person asking about Barry Adamsons basses: On the promo videos from Real Life/Secondhand Daylight he has a blond Rickenbacker (which looks like it was his main bass at the time) and a Gibson SG bass, on later stuff he is using an Ovation Magnum (a 'II' I think). It sounds like he might also have used as fretless on MMATW (perhaps on the Garden). No idea what his effects were but taking a guess I'd say a chorus, a delay pedal set with a very short delay and a compressor cranked right up. Also, the Rickenbacker and Ovation basses were probably both the stereo models

Probably old news to y'all but Howard has done some vocals on Dave Formula's new album which looks like it's gonna be a peach if the stuff on Dave's MySpace is anything to go by.

a pleasure, Phil... forgot to mention that Baz sang lead on Walk On By - he did a very similar arrangement to Isaac Hayes' version.... there was an aftershow event in the foyer where he read some poetry whilst some of the band improvised - not my cup of tea but I left the gig smiling anyway... I'm sure the gig was recorded and will be released on somewhere... did anyone go to the previous evening?

Phil Hartley on 12:37 28th-Nov-07 GMT #651-47017
Thanks for that Flux. I wish I could have been there.
