Thanks for the info - I'll investigate further...

The tribute song is by Momus; it's called The Most Important Man Alive and, as far as i know, is only available on the Bungalow Records compilation Suite:98. It's a great track and definitely worth tracking down.

does anyone know anything more about a tribute song to Howard - from ages ago I think, of which the first verse goes: You are, quite simply, the most important man alive I'd like to thank you for simply being in my life You never meant to leave much of a mark On a world you're content to leave in the dark But you are, quite simply, the most important man alive

It's a Magnum 1 Howard, the Magnum 2 has onboard EQ. I only know this because I've been after one ever since I saw it on the cover of Play all those years ago. Not that I'm an obsessed bass nutter or anything !!!! p.s. if anybody has one and wants to give it to me, that would be fine !

Howard on 11:57 6th-Dec-07 GMT [www.youtube.com/watch] #72d-47145
.... and judging by this 1984 video he also had what appears to be a fretless Ibanez Musician. It's got that classic Magazine sound so he probably had it on MMATW

flux on 10:05 4th-Dec-07 GMT #458-47133
to follow on from Howard's comments about Barry's basses - think he used an Electro Harmonix Clone Theory - a chorus type pedal which was very popular at the time... EH have updated them but you can still find the old type on ebay

Howard on 11:11 1st-Dec-07 GMT #920-47094
To the person asking about Barry Adamsons basses: On the promo videos from Real Life/Secondhand Daylight he has a blond Rickenbacker (which looks like it was his main bass at the time) and a Gibson SG bass, on later stuff he is using an Ovation Magnum (a 'II' I think). It sounds like he might also have used as fretless on MMATW (perhaps on the Garden). No idea what his effects were but taking a guess I'd say a chorus, a delay pedal set with a very short delay and a compressor cranked right up. Also, the Rickenbacker and Ovation basses were probably both the stereo models

Probably old news to y'all but Howard has done some vocals on Dave Formula's new album which looks like it's gonna be a peach if the stuff on Dave's MySpace is anything to go by.

a pleasure, Phil... forgot to mention that Baz sang lead on Walk On By - he did a very similar arrangement to Isaac Hayes' version.... there was an aftershow event in the foyer where he read some poetry whilst some of the band improvised - not my cup of tea but I left the gig smiling anyway... I'm sure the gig was recorded and will be released on somewhere... did anyone go to the previous evening?

Phil Hartley on 12:37 28th-Nov-07 GMT #651-47017
Thanks for that Flux. I wish I could have been there.

flux on 12:37 28th-Nov-07 GMT #458-47014
Bazza's gig last night was really really enjoyable - he had a 4 piece band incl. Nick Plytas (kbds), an 11 piece horn section & a 20 piece string section - various guests came on... Formula played hammond on The Cat, Eugene Robinson sang Tom Waits, McAlmont sang Curtis Mayfield & Nick Cave did an amazing Brel number - Immodesty Blaize stripped to Bernstein full track list: Man From UNCLE (Goldsmith), Shot In The Dark (Mancini), The Cat (Turrentine), Mr Eddy's Theme (Adamson), Angel Eyes (Brent/Dennis), Vibes Ain't Nothing But.. (Adamson), Romeo Is Bleeding (Waits), Uomo DE Rispaterre (Morricone), Dirty Harry (Schifrin), Human Jungle (Barry), Next (Brel), Big Bamboozle (Adamson), Pusherman (Mayfield), Man With Golden Arm (Bernstein), Walk On By (Bacharach) - Adamson played bass, guitar, vibes on 'The Vibes' & melodica on 'Un Uomo' - did hope Devoto would show for a number - they could've done Goldfinger couldn't they?

Sorry, wasn't thinking, meant to type late 70s.

Ryan @ on 12:37 28th-Nov-07 GMT #c4b-47012
Hey, I'm a long-time Magazine fan, and a bassist. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about the gear (pedals, guitars, amps) Magazine used in the early 70s? Especially curious about what that great chorus is that was used on the bass in those days.. Thanks a lot for any help.

Does anyone have an acapella for 'Give You Everything?' If so, please contact me at myspace.com/masterofrecords. Thanks!

Lydon answered my question in the new issue of Uncut. I won't give much away, but his answer was about McGeoch's alchoholism during his final years and how his death came as almost a relief. It's very sad for such an underappreciated talent to go out like that.

Graeme @ on 17:48 9th-Nov-07 GMT #2d1-46796
Cheers G, ticket incoming & a seat for me old legs too!
