very harsh, Zen - conformity to what? there are no original ideas - just interpretations... I think Magazine were maybe a more conventional band than PIL but they certainly didn't conform... and I would love to have heard some solo McGeogh stuff

Harsh indeed, Zen. He played much too much American metal stuff with PIL and excellent though it was, you certainly couldn't call it experimental. Age may bring wisdom and experience, but it also brings resentment and fear. In musical terms as well as any other terms. E.g. 'I've heard it all before, it sounds just like Travis/The House Of Love/The Byrds etc., etc.' I really do believe that a chap or chapess gets too old for 'pop' music.
