Musings

A friend of mine was recently musing to me that 'Play' is one of the best live albums ever recorded. It prompted me to go back and listen to it again and, indeed, it has a life and a ferocity that's only hinted at on the studio recordings. I remember being at the gig where the album was recorded at Festival Hall in Melbourne in about September 1980 and it was a stunning performance. There were a couple of other bands on the bill, including XTC who headlined but Magazine were the clear highlight for me. I had gone along to the gig dying to see John McGeoch play and was disappointed that he had just left and Robin Simon was there in his stead. Simon's playing on the 'Play' is tighter and more accurate than the live work that I've heard on recordings of McGeoch so I guess it was good that I got over my dissappointment quickly. I clearly remember that there were tv cameras long the front of the stage but I don't think I've ever seen any footage from the gig. Is there any out there?
